Vi Modes:

• COMMAND mode

  • The default mode on entering vi.
  • Anything typed is interpreted as a command.

• INSERT mode

  • Enter INSERT mode by typing one of several commands.
  • Anything typed is interpreted as data.
  • Exit INSERT mode by typing the <ESC> key.
