AiS Challenge - Java

Java is now the primary supported language of the AiS Challenge. Languages such as C, C++, Fortran, and others are still acceptable to use in your projects, and will be supported by the AiS Challenge staff as much as possible.

You will need to download the Java 2 SDK (Software Development Kit), Version 1.3.1 Software for Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 / NT 4.0 / ME if you want to create and execute Java programs locally on your own PC.

Installing Java

• Read the System Requirements

• Download the Java 2 SDK, Version 1.3.1 (34,484,291 Bytes — Hope you're not in a hurry ... )

• Perform steps 1-4 of the Installation Instructions

  
  Note: From the above link, steps 1-4 are necessary to begin. Step 5 is for advanced programmers, and need not be done right away.

* If you are having difficulty with step 4, please e-mail consult.

Test It Out!

1. From a DOS prompt, type "edit hello_graphic.java" (no quotes).
   
   
   • Optional: If you know how to use them, here are some other basic DOS Commands

2. Type in the text from the following file: hello_graphic.java (Note that Java is case sensitive!)
   
   
   • Your final result should look like this picture

3. Save your changes and exit the text editor (use the "File" pull-down menu)

4. Back at the DOS prompt, type "javac hello_graphic.java" (no quotes)
   
   
   • This will only work if you have updated your PATH variable in step 4 of the installation instructions

5. If there are error messages, redo steps 1-4. You have most likely typed someting in incorrectly.
   If there are no error messages, type "java hello_graphic" (no quotes) to run the program.

* You can try the above steps again by creating a file named "temperature.java" and entering the following code: temperature.java.
