Gene Matching using Bioinformatics
School: ONATE HIGH
Area of Science: Bioinformatics
Proposal: As the emerging field of bioinformatics continues to expand, the ability to rapidly search large databases of genetic information is becoming increasingly important. Our problem is to specify two different creatures native to New Mexico and match their deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) using a program that scans two specified databases and searches for a degree of similarity between them.
This project is significant because it can relate two different species very accurately, and can perhaps one day be expanded to specify the similarities, and find similar traits in different species, thereby tracing the evolutionary line.
Our plan of action is to create a program that can quickly and efficiently scan two large databases for similarities and record these similarities, and perhaps even provide a visual output of the DNA sections that are similar.
